Los Angeles Mayoral candidates and the power of wealth
Place of View: Los Angeles Mayoral candidates and the electrical power of wealth
The race for Los Angeles mayor highlights a troubling tendency in politics – not just in LA, but all in excess of the nation. Hear from Common Supervisor Monthly bill Lamb on his most recent Place of Watch.
There are several excellent and completed candidates in the race for Los Angeles mayor like U.S. Rep. Karen Bass, Los Angeles Town Councilmen Kevin de Leon and Joe Buscaino, Metropolis Attorney Mike Feuer and billionaire developer Rick Caruso. We will not endorse any of them because our coverage is to not endorse.
This campaign, on the other hand, highlights a troubling inclination in politics – not just in LA, but all in excess of the place – to demonize wealthy candidates. Political challengers do it, political action committees do it, and even some in the media do it.
Why? We have produced this mentality of disparaging the character of abundant and productive men and women – inferring that they must have acquired their fortunes by way of questionable practices. Or, that working difficult, getting hazards and in the long run fulfilling the American desire is someway distasteful.
Rick Caruso is a good illustration. Since he’s rich, some people want us to feel his prosperity is truly a unfavorable and they want to distract us from the elephant in the home, that Caruso’s results has permitted him to develop a exclusive established of organization and managerial expertise that could help Los Angeles.

A person author wrote, “When you have a fortune… you can waltz into the marketing campaign at the last minute and beat your message into the heads of voters.”
Guaranteed, but why would we have a problem with anyone spending their possess funds to get elected? Is it somehow far more noble to beg donors for money or curry favor with distinctive fascination teams to raise income?
By the way, in 2018, the Town Council handed new policies allowing competent candidates to get $6 in general public funds for every single $1 they raise from town people. 10 of the 12 mayoral candidates on the ballot have recognized matching money from the metropolis. Caruso has not. Is it better for us to have the town of Los Angeles just take our taxpayer pounds and match marketing campaign dollars 6 to 1?
Again, FOX 11 is not endorsing anybody. The message right here is only that we need to decide the candidates on their file of achievements, their character, their thoughts and their possible, but we should not penalize a person simply for the reason that they’ve been effective.
